Our intellectual insights have their limits. They can indeed be revised. But at some point we will need to say we are traveling by the knowledge of faith and not by human knowledge alone. So, as Copleston says: no Christian thinker ever thought that philosophy would bring salvation. Philosophy should take that into account and will be greatly enriched by doing so, if it faces an open horizon of transcendence. Theology’s concern is to say that the open horizon is not blank. There is a Transcendent Word, although it comes to us in immanent forms. The kernel of this revelation is stated in the Gospel of John, ch.1: The logos of God became human in CHRIST JESUS, and we have seen his glory, full of truth and grace.
